Course overview

This course will focus on the more creative aspects of photography investigating different genres of photography as well as creative picture making techniques. The course will also develop your compositional skills as well as build upon your camera knowledge and skills. Ideal for those who have attended previous courses but also open to newcomers.

The overall aim of the course will be to help you improve your creativity, inspire you to make more ambitious photographs and develop your confidence with your cameras. You will undertake a variety of assignments to introduce you to various genres of photography before you settle on a choice of genre to develop into a small project with full technical support throughout!

When Tuesday, 6:30pm - 8:30pm from 16th April 2024 until 16th July 2024 for 10 weeks.

There will be no class on 28th May (Half term), 11th & 25th June 24, 9, 16 July 24

Cost The full fee is £139.00. The concessionary fee is £70.00.

What you already need to know

This course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience of photography.

To make the most of this course, learners need a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera or mirrorless camera. Bridge cameras can be used, but have reduced functions which can limit the end results.

***When enrolling, please give the ACRES office details of your camera (make, model, number etc) to be passed to the tutor before the start of the course***

What you will learn

There are 5 core outcomes to the course which you will be able to achieve with the creative and technical support of your tutor.

• Learn how to make images that explore the different genres of photography.
• Learn how to use the unique way the camera "sees" to produce pages that include motion control or depth of field control..
• Learn good exposure control using a variety of techniques suitable to your chosen genre. For example Aperture Mode, Shutter Mode or Manual Mode.
• Learn creative use of different stated Compositional techniques to make your images as interesting as possible.
• Create a folio of 6 images showing a creative approach to image making in a chosen genre. Landscape, Portrait, Street, Architecture, or Still Life

How you will learn it

• Plenty of hands-on demonstrations of camera functions, discovering how best to use the camera to get great results, and fun creative in-class assignments to get you familiar with your camera!
• There will be in-class creative challenges to help you master specific applications of your camera all with expert tuition and demonstration.
• Each session we will introduce a specific theme and home challenges will be set to enable students to practise techniques between classes.
• Students will also have access to and use an online learning resource where they can access all the teacher materials whenever they wish, as well as upload their own images for review and feedback.

Bring to the first session

• DSLR or mirrorless camera.
• A Tripod. If you do not have a tripod, one will be provided during classes and advice given as to what tripod to purchase as your photography develops.

Please do not purchase any materials or items until you are certain that your course will run to avoid unnecessary costs. Course decisions are normally made a week before the course start date.

Extra study or practice

Each week home assignments will be set for you to practise in your own time. Develop your skills learnt in class, followed by a peer-to-peer review to help you improve your skills and creativity even further.
