Brush up your maths skills and learn how to use these techniques to inform your financial decisions during the cost of living crisis.
Course overview
This short course will help to boost your confidence and ability to use maths effectively in your daily life, at home and at work.
Where This is an online course.
When
Monday, 7:30pm - 8:30pm from 18th March 2024 until 22nd April 2024 for 4 weeks.
There are no classes on 1st & 8th April (Spring Break)
Cost
This course is FREE as part of the Street Learning Partnership between ACRES and Wealden District Council.
During the course
This course will be taught online via the Google Meet video platform. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in any online sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking, listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time. You will therefore need to have access to either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or phone) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.
You may decide that you would like to create a separate email account for your online learning prior to the start of the course and let the ACRES' Office and your tutor know the address. This will be more secure and also allow you to share your email address with other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.
What you already need to know
A basic understanding of number operations; how to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
What you will learn
How to have increased confidence with numbers and number skills that will help you with household and cost of living numeracy activities including:
- percentages (%) - this can be applied to mortgages, loans and credit cards
- proportion - how this might relate to your shopping bill
- averages - what does it mean to have an 'average fuel bill'?
- understanding your payslip - salary / hourly rate / tax
How you will learn it
You will learn through:
- Tutor explanation and demonstration
- Worked examples
- Practical activities
Bring to the first session
Please bring a pen, pencil and notepad to the first session.
Things you may need during the course:
A calculator.
Extra study or practice
It is recommended that you practise what you have learnt during the lessons at home so that you can consolidate your knowledge and skills.
