Art Appreciation - Innovation, Revolt and the start of Abstract Art (C) (BE09Z10C)

Mont Sainte Victoire Paul Cezanne

Course overview

Continuing on from the Impressionists' focus on spontaneity and direct observations of nature and everyday life, artists at the turn of the 20th Century took art further with a refusal of all inherited conventions. With bold use of blocks of colour, flattening of space and the dislocations of multiple viewpoints which evolved into Cubism and the start of Abstract Art, a momentous and radical shift took place that was to be hugely influential. This will be a journey of discovery that Maya will take you on as you study works of art that changed the history of art. This is a continuation of the course that started in the Autumn Term. What you already need to know

No particular prior knowledge is needed just an enthusiasm for the subject. This is a continuation of a course that started in September 2023 but you do not need to have attended a previous course as each topic will be studied independently.

What you will learn

Together we examine works by Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse and others and discover how the use of colour and form become fragmented in a profound reaction against naturalist styles in pursuit of a new art that can be said to be the beginnings of modern art.

How you will learn it

Through the use of art, presentations and literature, Maya will guide you to look deeper into works of art and explore the history, social and cultural context that played a part in the development of these movements. However, it is through interaction, discussion and activities that you will truly be able to discover your own response to these truly remarkable artworks.

Maya studied History of Art at St Andrews University - Western Art spanning the eras from the Byzantine to the Contemporary and specialised in 20th Century art. She has been teaching GCSE and A Level students how to respond and analyse form, style, techniques and meaning through the investigation of various artworks from across the globe and from different periods and also how they interrelate and influence each other. Maya believes that it is vital to view art through its social and cultural contexts, to recognise its significance and the value of its qualities in order to fully interpret and appreciate it. She is enjoying sharing her passion with adult learners.
