Course overview
Composition is perhaps the most important element of a photograph. No matter how much money you spend on a camera you will never find a composition button, it is all down to the photographer!
This course will guide you through the many compositional rules, and teach you how to creatively apply them to make for more successful images.

When
Tuesday, 6:30pm - 8:30pm from 19th September 2023 until 28th November 2023 for 10 weeks.
There will be no class on 24th October (Half term).
Cost
The full fee is £139.00.
The concessionary fee is £70.00.
What you already need to know
This course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience of photography.
To make the most of this course, learners need a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera or mirrorless camera. Bridge cameras can be used, but have reduced functions which can limit the end results. When enrolling, please give the ACRES office details of your camera to be passed to the tutor before the start of the course
What you will learn
The techniques you will learn during the course are related to the topic of composition, but students can also expect to develop a technical understanding of their camera as the course progresses. Full technical support is given throughout the course at a level deemed suitable for individual students, so whether a complete beginner or a photographer with some experience this course is ideal!
You will explore how the following affect photography and how to use the different compositional rules to affect your picture outcomes:
- The Rule of 3rds
- Leading lines
- Symmetry
- Pattern
- Colour
How you will learn it
- Plenty of hands-on demonstrations of camera functions, discovering how best to use the camera to get great results, and fun creative in-class assignments to get you familiar with your camera!
- There will be in-class creative challenges to help you master specific applications of your camera all with expert tuition and demonstration.
- Each session we will introduce a specific theme and home challenges will be set to enable students to practise techniques between classes.
- Students will also have access to and use an online learning resource where they can access all the teacher materials whenever they wish, as well as upload their own images for review and feedback.
Bring to the first session
- DSLR or mirrorless camera.
- A Tripod. If you do not have a tripod, one will be provided during classes and advice given as to what tripod to purchase as your photography develops.
Please do not purchase any materials or items until you are certain that your course will run to avoid unnecessary costs. Course decisions are normally made a week before the course start date.

Extra study or practice
Each week home assignments will be set for you to practise in your own time. Develop your skills learnt in class, followed by a peer-to-peer review to help you improve your skills and creativity even further.
