Course overview
A hand-building ceramics course for those looking to experiment with clay, learn new techniques and explore a wide range of decorations and glazes. This term the inspirational theme will be patterns, exploring repeat patterns, surface design and sprig indentations to add interest and dimension to hand crafted designs.
Come and learn from a tutor who is an experienced painter and potter, with an extensive knowledge in throwing, hand-building and slipcasting. Clare is passionate about ceramics and loves sharing her ideas, skills and knowledge with her students to help everyone reach their full potential.
The fee includes basic materials.

When
Monday, 6:30pm - 9:00pm from 15th April 2024 until 1st July 2024 for 10 weeks.
No classes on 6th May (Bank Holiday), 27th May (Half-term)
Cost
The full fee is £235.00.
The concessionary fee is £149.00.
Additional Costs
Materials will be provided for small and medium-sized pieces of work.
Larger items can be produced, kiln space depending. Additional materials can be purchased from the tutor, or the tutor can advise where to buy clay and equipment if you choose to create large works of art. Please speak to your tutor if you are unsure.
What you already need to know
Open to beginners looking to explore this fabulously tactile medium or those looking to develop their existing skills and knowledge.
What you will learn
During the course you will learn the following skills:
- The full process from design to a finished piece
- Different hand-building techniques and when to use them
- Which clay to use depending on the required end result and use
- The glazing process and choices
- Firing options and cycles.
Each termly 10 week course focuses on a creative theme to aid inspiration, help unlock imagination, and serve as a direction for research into the work of artists and pieces. This course, the theme will be
pattern.
How you will learn it
- Tutor demonstration and guidance
- Group and individual tuition
- Hands-on experimentation
- Exploration of the history and work of other artists
- Individual and group research and sharing of findings via the use of Padlet
Bring to the first session
- Pen or pencil and apron.
- A note/sketchbook to sketch your design ideas, and note what clays and glazes you use in your work for future reference.
- During the first session, you will be advised on a list of tools that you may like to use during the course. Most of these can be found at home.

Extra study or practice
Preparation and home research to develop your interest, designs and ideas ready for the course sessions.
Research of artists and pottery studios will expand your knowledge of the subject and may prompt areas for development in your 3D work.
