What you already need to know

No particular prior knowledge is needed just an enthusiasm for the subject.

What you will learn

During this course you will learn how to break down a work of art into its essential elements of colour, line, composition, space, medium and title.

By exploring how different artists have used these basic forms in their works, together we will analyse and identify their significance and value. This will then help you to recognise these elements in all future artworks that you come across and deepen your appreciation of art, whether it is classical or contemporary.

How you will learn it

Through use of art, presentations and literature.
However, it is through interaction, discussion and activities that you will truly be able to discover your own response to these truly remarkable artworks.

"Such an interesting subject and Maya breaks it down so that we can discuss each aspect thoroughly. I feel that I have learnt a lot."
"I am looking forward to the next course."

Maya studied History of Art at St Andrews University - Western Art spanning the eras from the Byzantine to the Contemporary and specialised in 20th Century art. She has been teaching GCSE and A Level students how to respond and analyse form, style, techniques and meaning through the investigation of various artworks from across the globe and from different periods and also how they interrelate and influence each other. Maya believes that it is vital to view art through its social and cultural contexts, to recognise its significance and the value of its qualities in order to fully interpret and appreciate it. She is enjoying sharing her passion with adult learners.
