Course overview
This is a new course for students with some experience and understanding of the core skills of drawing and Painting. You will build on your confidence and develop 'your style in a small friendly group through observational drawing, studies of tone, form, colour and composition, each skill will be explored in greater depth.

Monday, 12:30pm - 3:00pm from 9th January 2023 until 20th March 2023 for 10 weeks.
No class on 13th February (Half Term)

The full fee is £179.00.
The concessionary fee is £93.00.
What you already need to know
This course those who have some experience in drawing and painting and are looking to refresh and expand their knowledge, confidence and skills.
What you will learn
You will gain confidence in observational drawing, looking at tone, colour theory and composition. You will also have the opportunity to experiment.
Topics covered will include:
- Ways to represent tone in drawing
- Ways to construct composition
- Colour theory
- Mixing different pallets
- Brush techniques
- Explore and study new classical and contemporary artists and how you can reproduce their techniques in your art.
By the end of the course, you will have produced a range of pictures, that will be a record of your own personal development. You will have the basic knowledge to enable you to get started with your own projects at home or you may choose to continue learning and developing your skills on the next drawing course.
How you will learn it
- Tutor-led tuition and demonstration
- Hands-on practice of skills
- Exploration and discussion of other artists and techniques used to achieve their finished works.
- Self, tutor and group reviews and feedback using a secure online platform (Padlet) to share resources and track your progress
Bring to the first session
- Acrylic paints including: Cadmium red, cadmium yellow, lemon yellow, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, and alizarin crimson, white & black. Examples are; Daler Rowney - System 3 / Windsor and Newton / golden.
- Painting kit - preferred paints and brushes, palette
- Watercolour pencils, 12 - 36. Examples are; Faber & Castell/ Derwent/ WH Smiths have good quality pigments in their pencils.
- Drawing pencils - different grades 2H, H, B, 2B, 4B, 6B
- An eraser
- A 30 cm ruler
- A3 sketchbook or paper 200 - 300 gsm or heavier
- A water container and pots
- Masking tape
- Blending stick (optional)
- A board for taping work to (optional)
- Matte medium and a retarder. Examples: Golden or Liquitex (optional)
- A table easel (optional) ACRES have a few available to loan for your lessons, please ask at enrolment.
A handy optional item would be an A3 portfolio to keep your work together but a large bag will do.
To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or textbooks until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date. Please contact the office for details.
Extra study or practice
Some preparation and research learning about selected artists and their techniques will be useful. Your tutor will give you pointers and links each week.
You may wish to spend time at home practising skills and techniques between classes.
