Course overview
Own a DSLR or mirrorless camera and never got off auto mode? Confused by the menu and multiple functions? This course will take you through some of the key functions of your camera, teach you how to use them to make better photographs.
This course is more technical than the Creative Photography course, reflecting the greater functionality of these cameras.
Where Uckfield Civic Centre, Civic Approach, Uckfield, East Sussex, TN22 1AE.
When
Wednesday, 12:30pm - 2:30pm from 21st September 2022 until 16th November 2022 for 8 weeks.
There will be no class on 26th October (Half term).
Cost
The full fee is £113.00.
The concessionary fee is £57.00.
What you already need to know
This course is suitable for absolute beginners and will start with the very basics, so no prior knowledge is needed.
What you will learn
- Master the focus of your camera to ensure a sharper image.
- Consider exposure and take control of how light or dark your images are.
- Different ways of making more creative pictures by using compositional techniques.
- The key functions of the mode dial, what they do and when to use them. You will never shoot on Auto again!
- How the camera "sees". Learn to control key photographic effects such as depth of field and shutter speed.
- Finally, you will learn a wide range of creative camera effects that your cameras have and how to apply them to make really creative images.
How you will learn it
Plenty of hands-on demonstrations of camera functions, discovering how best to use the camera to get great results, and fun creative in-class assignments to get you familiar with your camera!
There will be in-class creative challenges to help you master specific applications of your camera all with expert tuition and demonstration.
Each session we will introduce a specific theme and home challenges will be set to enable students to practise techniques between classes.
Students will also have access to and use an online learning resource where they can access all the teacher materials whenever they wish, as well as upload their own images for review and feedback.
Bring to the first session
- DSLR or mirrorless camera.
- Laptop, computer or portable device, fully charged.
- A Tripod. If you do not have a tripod, one will be provided during classes and advice given as to what tripod to purchase as your photography develops.
Please do not purchase any materials or items until you are certain that your course will run to avoid unnecessary costs. Course decisions are normally made a week before the course start date.

Extra study or practice
This course is project-based, so you will be expected to work outside of class to develop your photo projects. Project progress will be reviewed, and constructive feedback given by the tutor and peers each week in class to support ongoing personal development and encourage critical thinking.
