To make the most of this course, learners should have access to a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera. A hybrid or bridge camera would also be suitable for this course. When enrolling, please give the ACRES office details of your camera to be passed to the tutor before the start of the course.
What you will learn
- Shooting in RAW and understanding the increased flexibility this gives you when editing.
- Understanding exposure, contrast and balance.
- Enhancing backgrounds.
- Masking and touching up photographs to give a professional finish.
- Reviewing the range of paid and free editing software options.
How you will learn it
Using the school computers and Photoshop package.
Photographs will be reviewed, constructive feedback will be given by the tutor to support ongoing personal development and to encourage critical thinking.
There will be tutor demonstrations, presentations and group discussions and throughout the course there will be plenty of time for you to explore and experiment.
You will be shown how to upload your photographs to a group online 'noticeboard' called Padlet. This gives students the opportunity to notice different effects and pick out features in their own and other's work.
Bring to the first session
- DSLR camera
- Notebook and pen
- A tripod is also useful; however if you do not have one, please do not purchase one before the course, as the tutor will be able to advise you on models.
- You will need your own editing software for use at home. Some DSLR cameras come with recommendations. If you have not downloaded software prior to the course, please wait until the tutor guides you on which to use as they vary greatly in quality and value for money.
Please do not purchase any materials or items until you are certain that your course will run to avoid unnecessary costs. Course decisions are normally made a week before the course start date.
