Art Appreciation - Art in Britain from Protest to Glory (BE09G02A)

Course overview

When Henry VIII became the King of England, he initiated a cultural revolution like no other. Taking control over the Church and suppressing the monastic orders, artists were no longer able to depict God. Art instead became a political tool and portraiture the best means with which to display power and legitimise the Tudor reign. From then on, the visual arts in Britain was reconstructed for wholly secular purposes either as a system of propaganda or to demonstrate the wealth and interests of the aristocracy. From the glory of the Tudor Courts and the exuberance of Charles I, through the Civil War, the ascendancy of the British Empire and the dawning of the age of scientific reason in the 18th Century, this course will trace the transformation of the arts during this great period of dramatic change in Britain.

What you already need to know

No particular prior knowledge is needed just an enthusiasm for the subject.

What you will learn

We will start the course by investigating how art took a dominant role in promoting the royal dynasty, through the works of Holbein who worked for Henry VIII and Anthony Van Dyck who was patronised by Charles I. The British love of portraiture continued to flourish through the 18th Century but we see a new spirit of ambition amongst British artists such as Gainsborough and Reynolds who start to expand the limits of merely painting faces to include broader, deeper meanings in their portraits. During the 18th Century we also see the beginnings of the British love for satire with Hogarth's modern moral tales. This is also an age of great advancements in science and we will explore how some artists such as George Stubbs look to the natural world as a vital source of knowledge.

How you will learn it

Through the use of art, presentations and literature, Maya will guide you to look deeper into works of art and explore the history, social and cultural context that played a part in the development of these movements.
However, it is through interaction, discussion and activities that you will truly be able to discover your own response to these truly remarkable artworks.
