Dressmaking for All Abilities (UC09N21C)
Your wardrobe your way. Beginners to advanced. Sarah will guide you through making your garment from start to finish.
Course overview
This is a dressmaking course for all abilities. Beginners will work on learning and developing basic skills of dressmaking whilst more experienced students will build on prior knowledge working with more advanced techniques, fabrics and patterns. Start from scratch or alter an item you already have in your wardrobe.
Where Uckfield Civic Centre, Civic Approach, Uckfield, East Sussex, TN22 1AE.
When
Wednesday, 10:00am - 12:30pm from 12th January 2022 until 30th March 2022 for 10 weeks.
No class 16th February 2022 (Half term holiday).
Cost
The full fee is £179.00.
The concessionary fee is £97.00.
What you already need to know
This course is for all abilities. It is open to everyone and you will be very welcome whether you are an absolute beginner or have experience of dressmaking.
What you will learn
The tutor will tailor your learning to your individual sewing experience and to the projects that interest you. You will be expected to bring in your own projects to work on. Skills that you may learn will include:
- How to operate the sewing machine and resolve problems with tension
- Stitch a variety of seams and hems
- Understand how to read sewing patterns
- Make garments that fit your body
- Alter pattern pieces to get the perfect fit
- How to choose good fabrics for your projects
- Add shaping to garments
- Insert zips
How you will learn it
You will learn from tutor demonstrations, practical application of knowledge, individual tuition and feedback. You will look at relevant websites, view video tutorials and receive handouts which you can take home.
Bring to the first session
- A sewing machine if you have own, although we do have some that you can use during the lessons.
- A basic sewing kit (large and small scissors, pins, tape measure, stitch picker, fabric chalk/marker, hand and machine needles, bobbin sewing threads)
- Fabric remnants for samples
- Notebook and pen for taking notes
- Fabric and components for projects
To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or textbooks until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date.
Extra study or practice
You may choose to do additional work or continue with your making at home if you wish to do so, but this is optional.

Specific Covid Considerations:
In the event of restrictions being reintroduced and if the class is remaining in the venue, you will be informed of further safety measures. If the lessons cannot take place because the tutor has to isolate or in the event of government-imposed restrictions or lockdowns, every effort will be made to reschedule the missed classes. If it is not possible to continue the course in the venue it will be continued online. If this is not possible we will refund the outstanding lessons.
To ensure Safe Practice during practical sessions:
- Class numbers are reduced to allow students to space apart.
- Students should work at separate tables or desks.
- Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms.
- You are responsible for sanitising your own workspace before and after each lesson, anti-bacterial wipes or spray will be provided by the tutor.
- Wearing a mask is a personal choice. Please respect the choices of your tutor and fellow students.
- Windows and doors left open to allow for room ventilation should not be adjusted by students.
- Sharing of equipment is discouraged, but if it is essential, please use the wipes / spray provided to clean between handling.
- Please make yourself aware of local guidance, particularly in community venues.
You must not attend the class if you show signs or symptoms of Covid-19, are awaiting results of a PCR Covid test, have been in close contact with a Covid-19 patient within 14 days or anyone who has been advised to self isolate for any reason. Please inform the ACRES' office, who will advise the tutor.
All tutors, students and visitors are encouraged to participate in rapid lateral flow testing in the interest of everybody's safety, however, this is not a mandatory requirement. Test kits are readily available locally or from the
gov website.
