Art Appreciation; 17th Century Baroque - Spain and the Netherlands (C) (BE09U11C)

.

Course overview

The 17th Century was notable as a Golden Age for art for both Spain and the Netherlands and it is to these regions that we will be turning our attention. In Spain, we will explore how the Catholic Church together with the devout Hapsburg Emperors supported art that became characterised by intense realism and mystical fervour. Taking influence from Italian Baroque artists and their use of light and dark, the Spanish artists took their art further by introducing a more compelling sense of human drama. We will also focus on the Netherlands which during this period emerged as a vital new political and economic force. During the rise of the Dutch republic in the 17th Century, the Netherlands saw a great change in the balance of power where the cultural force passed into the hands of the increasingly prosperous middle class. Rapidly expanding cities were the main location for the artists and their patrons and much of the subject matter reflected the experiences and aspirations of the urban elite including landscapes, still-lifes and scenes of everyday life.

What you already need to know

No particular prior knowledge is needed just an enthusiasm for the subject.

What you will learn

For Spain we will look at artists such as Velazquez and Zurbaran who defined the age with their acute sense of observation and we will investigate how the patronage of these artists by both the Church and the Spanish Court would play a key role in the development of Baroque art in Spain.
For the Netherlands, we will look first to Rubens, who as a court painter produced Classical images that exemplified the true Baroque spirit, full of dynamic movement and vitality. We will then explore the socio-political background to the revolt against Spain, the formation of the Dutch Republic and the rise of the middle class and how this would affect the art market in the Netherlands. We will investigate the works of artists such as Frans Hals, Rembrandt and Vermeer and the urban form of visual expression that was being developed in this dramatically new economic environment.

How you will learn it

Through use of art, presentations and literature, Maya will guide you to look deeper into works of art and explore the history, social and cultural context that played a part in the development of these movements.
However, it is through interaction, discussion and activities that you will truly be able to discover your own response to these truly remarkable artworks.
