Course overview
Consolidate the basic techniques of upholstery and incorporate new ones such as square and diamond tufting. Upholstery is a process; a methodical, yet deeply satisfying hobby that cannot be rushed. Develop your skills gradually and be amazed by what you can produce.

Monday, 7:00pm - 9:00pm from 10th January 2022 until 21st March 2022 for 10 weeks.
No class on 14th February (Half Term)
Cost
The full fee is £136.00.
The concessionary fee is £70.00.

What you already need to know
Suitable for beginners and beginners plus.
All beginners start learning the upholstery process working on a dining chair with 'drop in' seat.
Those with some upholstery knowledge or those who have previously attended a beginners class will learn new skills.
This is a continuation of the course that started in the Autumn Term. Please contact the ACRES office to enquire about spaces if you have not previously enrolled on this course.
What you will learn
Upholstery is a process and Emma will take you through these step by step.
Topics covered will include:
- Basic tear back
- Order of operations for upholstered furniture
- Correct measuring and cutting of fabric
- How to centre and tension fabric for a smooth finish
- Introduce you to trims / pleats / easement cuts
- Foam selection and ratios for creating a foam insert
For beginners plus, in addition to a refresher of the basic techniques:
- Traditional and modern upholstery skills
- Single and double piping
- Creating your own patterns
- Using trims and braids in a manner sympathetic to the era of the furniture
How you will learn it
You will learn through tutor demonstration, printed handouts, and practical application.
Once you have mastered the basic techniques the tutor will work 1:1 with you to plan a project that will allow you to expand your skills using more complex techniques.
Bring to the first session
Beginners:
A dining chair with 'drop in' seat.
The fabric you would like to use, enough to cover the cushion area with some to spare
Flat blade and posidrive (cross headed) screwdriver
Round nose pliers
Electric staple gun

Later in the course you will work on other pieces of furniture, such as a footstool, or you may have something specific in mind. Your tutor will discuss new ideas as the course progresses.

To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any furniture, materials, tools or text books until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date.

You will need to continue work started in class ready for the next lesson

Specific Covid Considerations:
In the event of restrictions being reintroduced and if the class is remaining in the venue, you will be informed of further safety measures. If the lessons cannot take place because the tutor has to isolate or in the event of government-imposed restrictions or lockdowns, every effort will be made to reschedule the missed classes. If it is not possible to continue the course in the venue it will be continued online. If this is not possible we will refund the outstanding lessons.
To ensure Safe Practice during practical sessions:
- Class numbers are reduced to allow students to space apart.
- Students should work at separate tables or desks.
- Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms.
- You are responsible for sanitising your own workspace before and after each lesson, anti-bacterial wipes or spray will be provided by the tutor.
- Wearing a mask is a personal choice. Please respect the choices of your tutor and fellow students.
- Windows and doors left open to allow for room ventilation should not be adjusted by students.
- Sharing of equipment is discouraged, but if it is essential, please use the wipes / spray provided to clean between handling.
- Please make yourself aware of local guidance, particularly in community venues.
You must not attend the class if you show signs or symptoms of Covid-19, are awaiting results of a PCR Covid test, have been in close contact with a Covid-19 patient within 14 days or anyone who has been advised to self isolate for any reason. Please inform the ACRES' office, who will advise the tutor.
All tutors, students and visitors are encouraged to participate in rapid lateral flow testing in the interest of everybody's safety, however, this is not a mandatory requirement. Test kits are readily available locally or from the
gov website.

Upholstery for beginners will continue throughout the year.
Once the basic techniques have been demonstrated, returning learners are encouraged to develop their skills and move onto larger and more detailed projects, learning skills such as tailored or butterfly pleats, how to create a pattern for slip covers for ottomans, larger chair or sofa cushions and diamond tufting for headboards.
