Course overview
If English is not your first language, this course will help you to improve your speaking and listening skills. If you wish, you can take an exam at the end of the course to get an ESOL qualification.
This course is FREE to students on low income or receiving some kinds of benefits. Students who do not qualify for free courses can apply for a reduced fee. Please talk to us for more information.
Non ESFA eligible students can still enrol on this course but will pay the full non-funded rate which can be obtained from the ACRES Business Manager.

When
Tuesday and Thursday, 09:30am - 12:30pm from 12th October 2021 until 24th February 2022 for 16 weeks.
There are no classes on 12th & 14th October, 26th & 28th October (Half term), 21st and 23rd, 28th and 30th December (Christmas and New Year) No face to face WC 4/1/2022, some will be ONLINE. Students have been notified individually.
15th & 17th February 2022 (Half term)
NOTE: If restrictions are reintroduced, and the classes cannot take place in the venue, these will take place online.

During the course
You will be taught in person at the Uckfield Civic Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Both classes will be 9:30am - 12:30pm
Specific Covid Considerations:
To ensure Safe Practice for classes in venues:
- Class numbers are reduced to allow students to space apart.
- Students should work at separate tables or desks.
- Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms.
- You are responsible for sanitising your own work space before and after each lesson, anti-bacterial wipes or spray will be provided by the tutor.
- Wearing a mask is a personal choice. Please respect the choices of your tutor and fellow students.
- Windows and doors left open to allow for room ventilation should not be adjusted by students.
- Sharing of equipment is discouraged, but if it is essential, please use the wipes/spray provided to clean between handling.
- Please make yourself aware of local guidance, particularly in community venues.
You must not attend the class if you show signs or symptoms of Covid-19, are awaiting results of a PCR Covid test, have been in close contact with a Covid-19 patient within 14 days or anyone who has been advised to self isolate for any reason. Please inform the ACRES' office, who will advise the tutor.
All tutors, students and visitors are encouraged to participate in rapid lateral flow testing in the interest of everybody's safety, however, this is not a mandatory requirement. Test kits are readily available locally or from https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests

What you already need to know
You do not need to have an ESOL qualification before taking this course. Before joining the course you will meet your tutor who will help find the right course for you.
What you will learn
You will develop your skills in listening and speaking so that you may feel more able to take part in everyday situations of work, education, health, with friends and shopping.
- You will learn how to improve your vocabulary and pronunciation.
- You will develop your knowledge and use of grammar.
- You will study how to gain information
- You will practise asking and answering questions
- You will learn how to take part in everyday conversations
If you wish, you can take an exam at the end of the course to get an ESOL qualification in Speaking and Listening.
How you will learn it
You will learn directly from your tutor and through presentations, watching and listening to videos and the spoken word, practice activities and discussions. Throughout the course, your tutor will support you and discuss and agree on personal targets to help you reach your potential.
Bring to the first session
You will be emailed a link to the Google Meet session. Just before 9:30, the start of the lesson on Thursday, click on this link and you will either go straight into the session or into a waiting area and your tutor will let you join.

A requirement of this course is that you complete 20 hours of self-study. This is approximately 1.25 hours of study a week.
How to enrol
Step 1 GET IN CONTACT
Let ACRES know you are interested in an ESOL course.
- You can do this by either emailing adultlearning@acres.org.uk or by calling 01825 761820.
Step 2 MEET YOUR TUTOR
We will invite you to an online meeting with your tutor in August or September.
- This meeting will be online using Google Meet.
- For instructions on using Google Meet, please ask the ACRES team or visit our website for helpful step by step instructions and videos.
- You must have an email address as ACRES will email a link to you, which you will have to open to join the meeting.
- The meeting will last 45 minutes.
- During the meeting, two tutors will be present. They will both introduce themselves, and then the main course tutor will chat with you, and the other will make a few notes.
- You will be asked to complete some tasks so the tutor can assess the right course for you.
- At the end of the meeting, the tutor will tell you which course you are invited to join.
Step 3 COMPLETE YOUR ENROLMENT
At your meeting, you and your tutor will agree on a time to come to the ACRES House before starting your course.

Additional Course Information
Specific Covid Considerations:
In the event of restrictions being reintroduced and if the class is remaining in the venue, you will be informed of further safety measures. If the lessons cannot take place because the tutor has to isolate or in the event of government-imposed restrictions or lockdowns, every effort will be made to reschedule the missed classes. If it is not possible to continue the course in the venue it will be continued online. If this is not possible we will refund the outstanding lessons.

Future steps beyond ACRES
ESOL is a course that develops your English Language skills. This will help you to build confidence in using English. Ultimately, this will improve your experience and knowledge of living in the UK. ESOL courses will help improve your job opportunities and give you access to further education options and increased confidence in social and formal situations.
