The aim of this course will be to show how Hatha yoga can help individuals to access a state of true relaxation. During the six week course, you will learn and practice asanas and breathing techniques known to encourage a focus on the here and now and promote a feeling of calm and a sense of well being both mentally and physically.
What you already need to know
This course is for previous students on Rachel's Advanced or Improvers Plus courses (with at least 2 years of Yoga practice). It is limited to 5 learners to ensure social distancing and Covid secure measures.
If you have not practised yoga during the past year, you are absolutely welcome to consider enrolling on a less advanced course if you feel you would like to build back your confidence and knowledge. If you have maintained some practice through the lockdowns, please enrol on your usual course.
Please be aware in the interest of safeguarding all our students and staff and to be able to participate in this course, you will be required to complete, sign and return to ACRES the following agreement and questionnaire before the first session.
Notes and guidance for students returning to face to face classes
Pre Course Health Questionnaire
Additional course requirements
Due to the nature of this course, a degree of mobility is required. You will be expected to access the floor from standing and sitting for lying asana and relaxation.
Students are expected to understand and work within their personal movement range, being able to use adjustment for any limitations they may have.
Please note: In the interest of safeguarding all our students, this course is not suitable for those in the early stages of pregnancy (16 weeks or before) or pregnant and who have no previous yoga experience. We would recommend, in both cases, looking for a specialist prenatal or pregnancy yoga course.
What you will learn
In this course, you will
Practise yoga postures (Asana) from the three major movement groups to improve flexibility and strength
Access your personal movement range with regard to flexibility and strength within the postures
Practise one breathing (pranayama) technique and be encouraged to notice the effect it has on you
As a guide by the end of the course, you should have a greater awareness of your own body's movement range and recognise areas for developing flexibility and increased strength. You should also have identified potentially beneficial breathing techniques.
Continuing your yoga practice beyond this course will help build and maintain a sense of mental and physical well being.
How you will learn it
This is a practical course, work being reinforced with demonstration and discussion with the content being modified depending on student interest. Movements are broken down and then layered, developing a solid base from which you can progress. You are encouraged to develop an awareness of your body and movement patterns to identify personally beneficial breathing techniques.
Additional Covid Secure measures
The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority.
All classes will run with a reduced number of students to allow for the social distancing of 2 metres to be maintained. At the Heathfield Community Centre, we are limiting the maximum number of students to 5.
We will open windows and some doors to allow for good ventilation of the room.
Hand sanitisers will be available at the main entrance to the venue and must be used on the entry and exit of the class.
Touch surfaces will be wiped down after each class by the tutor, and each student will be asked to wipe down/sanitise their own touch surfaces after use (wipes and/or spray will be provided by ACRES)
Subject to current government Covid secure measures, students will be required to wear face coverings when in communal areas of the centre and when moving around the room.
Students will be permitted to remove their face coverings in the room whilst exercising on their mats, positioned at a social distancing of 2 metres.
What do I need to bring to the first session?
To help us manage social distancing in the room, we ask you to bring only the items you need to do the class.
A yoga mat. Please note there will be no communal mats able at the venue
A small cushion (optional)
Loose comfortable clothing and prepare to remove shoes and socks.
A pen and notepad to keep a diary of your practices week to week (optional)
Face Covering. For use in communal areas of the venue.
How much extra study or practice is involved?
You are encouraged to develop a home practice routine to help build and maintain a sense of mental and physical well being.
What do previous students say?
"Have found Yoga great for flexibility of the body and mind. Excellent Tutor. First-rate course"
"Rachel, I would like to share with you and other students about the progress which I feel that I have made during the past couple of years since attending your class. As you know, I am affected by positional vertigo, which can hamper my life sometimes. When I come to my yoga class, I adapt some of the movements and positions, and it works for me. I also try to do at least half an hour each day at home first thing in the morning or last thing at night. I find that on a regular basis, it helps to maintain flexibility and generally makes you feel a lot fitter."
"I am most proud of my increased flexibility and improved balance."
"This course has helped with my flexibility and ability to relax."
"I have enjoyed all of it but especially the relaxation at the end of the classes!"
