Course overview

This is a drawing and painting course for those who have some experience of observational drawing and wish to develop their core skills to a greater depth.

The focus of this course will be drawing and painting interiors and still life and will look at the work of 20th Century artists who work with colour and expressive brushstrokes such as Ivon Hitchins.

This course is for those that are not complete beginners but who have some experience of observational drawing.

If you have not used Google Meet previously please let the ACRES staff member know at enrolment so they can send you a 'How To Guide' and offer further support.

Where This is an online course.

When Monday, 12:30pm - 2:30pm from 19th April 2021 until 5th July 2021 for 10 weeks.

3rd May (Bank Holiday) and 31st May (Half Term)

Cost The full fee is £127.00. The concessionary fee is £63.00.

What you already need to know

This course is for those who have attended a year of Introduction to Drawing and Painting courses or have some experience of observational drawing. With our apologies, this course is not suitable for complete beginners.

What you will learn

You will continue to develop observational drawing and accuracy of line, use tone to show form, develop painting techniques, apply colour theory and have opportunities to create finished compositions. You will have opportunities to experiment with the effects of different art materials, evaluate the work of a variety of artists and record your own personal development through the use of a sketchbook.

Topics covered will include:

• Form and how to produce the effect of dimension with light and shade
• Devices and approaches that can help improve the accuracy of drawing
• Building a repertoire of brush marks and painting techniques
• Creating artwork using a selection of different compositional rules
• Exploring colour and aspects of colour-theory for different effects

How you will learn it

Using the online medium you will learn directly from your tutor as well as through tutor demonstrations, presentations, online resources and group discussion. Through practical work, there will be an opportunity to explore your own ideas and methods and to receive individual tuition. There will also be an opportunity to look at the source material and the work of other artists.

Bring to the first session

ACRES' online courses will be taught in real time using the video platform Google Meet, supported by other online resources. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in the sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking, listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time.

You will therefore need to have access to either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or phone) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.

Though it is not essential, you may choose to create a separate email account for your online learning (preferably Gmail which is most compatible with Google Meet). This will give you the added security to allow you to share your email address with your tutor and other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.

At the start of the course and before each lesson your tutor will send you an invitation with a link to join the class and any further information including resources and equipment you will need for the lesson.


Materials and items you will need to do the course

• An A3 sketchbook/paper.
• Drawing materials - different grade pencils
• Painting kit - preferred paints and brushes, palette, water pots.
• A portfolio to keep your work together but a large bag will do optional

Extra study or practice

You may wish to spend time at home practising skills and techniques from the classes.
