Course overview

Learn how to capture landscape scenes through watercolour painting.

This course will introduce you to painting with watercolours. You will be shown how to paint a variety of landscape features such as skies, land and trees. You will learn and/or improve some basic watercolour techniques. The activities will enable you to create a collection of small studies. There will be advice and support about watercolour materials and also ideas and guidance on how you could combine studies to create more complex compositions.

When Friday, 10:00am - 12:00pm from 29th January 2021 until 12th February 2021 for 3 weeks.

Cost The full fee is £42.00. The concessionary fee is £34.00.


Additional Costs
You will need to a range of basic watercolour materials and pencils, brushes and paper. To avoid unnecessary cost please do not purchase any materials or textbooks until you are certain that your course will run. Course decisions are normally made a week prior to the course start date. What you already need to know

This course is suitable for complete beginners or those who have some experience and wish to build on their existing skills.

What you will learn

With Emma you will explore:

• How to use different types of washes and to layer paint.
• A selection of different compositional layouts.
• How to create a variety of marks and effects using different techniques.
• Some basic colour theory and useful colour combinations.
• How perspective techniques can create sense of distance and depth.

By the end of the course, you will have experienced painting watercolour landscapes using different washes and compositions.

You will come away from the course with enough information to get started with your own projects at home.

How you will learn it

Using the online medium you will learn directly from your tutor as well as through presentations, videos, online resources and group discussion. You will have plenty of opportunity to develop your practical skills and your tutor will give you guidance and feedback.

Bring to the first session

ACRES' online courses will be taught in real time using the video platform Google Meet, supported by other online resources. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in the sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking, listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time.

You will therefore need to have access to either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or phone) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.

Though it is not essential, you may choose to create a separate email account for your online learning (preferably Gmail which is most compatible with Google Meet). This will give you the added security to allow you to share your email address with your tutor and other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.

At the start of the course and before each lesson your tutor will send you an invitation with a link to join the class and any further information including resources and equipment you will need for the lesson.


Materials and items you will need to do the course

• Watercolour paints in tubes or pans in a box. If possible have a variety of warm and cool reds, blues and yellows, for example, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt blue, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red. Some earth colours such as Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber are also useful. If you already have a set of colours it will probably have a good mix of suitable colours.
• A selection of soft brushes suitable for use with watercolour paints.
• Old brushes
• A drawing pencil, B/2B, and an eraser.
• A water container.
• Sheets of 300gsm watercolour paper
• A board for taping work to and masking tape (optional)
• A table easel (optional)
• Masking fluid (optional)
• Craft knife, a twig, a wax candle (optional)

Extra study or practice

You may wish to spend time practising skills and techniques between classes.
