Develop your Drawing Workshop (C) (BE09L17C)
Develop your own individual artistic style and learn about the decision processes involved in taking an initial idea through to final piece of original artwork.
Course overview
This course will build on the Drawing for Beginners course. Its focus will be on how to use your existing skills and knowledge of observational drawing and picture making to develop your own individual artistic style or language.
You will have the opportunity to learn about the decision processes involved when you start with a general concept and take it through to a final piece of original artwork. You will look at how to investigate source material, examine different compositions and viewpoints, consider the effects of conditions such as lighting, how to use study drawings to increase confidence and develop ideas, and finally how to analyse your work in order to recognise areas of possible improvement.

What you already need to know
This course is for students who have either completed a year of Drawing Workshops with Belinda Channer or have previous drawing experience and some knowledge of the formal aspects of drawing.
With our apologies, this course is not suitable for absolute beginners.
What you will learn
- How to develop a concept of interest to you and manifest it on the page or canvas.
- How to investigate source material and experiment with different compositions, approaches, viewpoints and conditions to allow your ideas to develop and even change.
- How to use study sketches and experiment with different styles
- How to develop picture critiquing skills in order to see more and therefore inform and improve your own work.
- How to recognise gaps in knowledge and skills in order to revisit those areas and make improvements.
- How to take a more proactive role in your learning and lead the development of your own artist's style or voice.
How you will learn it
Using the online medium you will learn directly from your tutor as well as through tutor demonstrations, presentations, online resources and group discussion. You will have plenty of opportunity to develop your practical skills and your tutor will give you guidance and feedback as you establish and undertake personal project work.
Padlet will be used to create an online interactive course support page with information, images, examples, demonstrations and video links uploaded to support each session as well as an online gallery for student work. Both of these can be accessed via the links given at the course start and can be used to support your development both in and away from the online classroom.
Bring to the first session
ACRES' online courses will be taught in real time using the video platform Google Meet, supported by other online resources. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in the sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking, listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time.
You will therefore need to have access to either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or phone) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.
Though it is not essential, you may choose to create a separate email account for your online learning (preferably Gmail which is most compatible with Google Meet). This will give you the added security to allow you to share your email address with your tutor and other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.
At the start of the course and before each lesson your tutor will send you an invitation with a link to join the class and any further information including resources and equipment you will need for the lesson.
Materials and items you will need to do the course
- A range of pencils 2b, 4b, 6b, 8b (three of these) and/or a mixed thickness box of charcoal,
- A putty rubber
- A standard eraser
- An A2 sketchbook (cartridge paper)
The tutor will advise you of any further materials required during the course.
Extra study or practice
Drawing between sessions is not compulsory but it may help you to practise skills covered in class.
