There are no classes on 6th, 8th, 13th & 15th April (Spring Break) 1st & 3rd June 2021 (Half-term)

How to enrol?
Step 1 GET IN CONTACT
Let ACRES know you are interested in an ESOL course.
You can do this by either emailing adultlearning@acres.org.uk or by calling 01825 761820.
Step 2 MEET YOUR TUTOR
We will invite you to an online meeting with your tutor. Appointment dates will be on 3rd, 10th & 17th September 2020.
This meeting will be online using Google Meet.
For instructions on how to use Google Meet please ask the ACRES team or visit our website for helpful step by step instructions and videos.
You must have an email address as ACRES will email a link to you which you will have to open to join the meeting.
The meeting will last 45 minutes.
During the meeting two tutors will be present, they will both introduce themselves and then the main course tutor will chat with you and the other will make a few notes.
You will be asked to complete some tasks so the tutor can assess the right course for you.
At the end of the meeting, the tutor will tell you which course you are invited to join.
Step 3 COMPLETE YOUR ENROLMENT
At your meeting, you and your tutor will agree a time for you to come to the ACRES House either on 8th, 15th or 24th September 2020 between 10 am and 2 pm.
(If you cannot make these days please do not worry, talk to your tutor or the ACRES team.)

A photo ID, for example, passport
Any up to date benefit letters

Course overview
If English is not your first language, this course will help you to improve your reading and writing skills. If you wish, you can take an exam at the end of the course to get an ESOL qualification.
This course is FREE to students on low income or receiving some kinds of benefits. Students who do not qualify for free courses can apply for a reduced fee. Please talk to us for more information.
Non ESFA eligible students can still enrol on this course but will pay the full non-funded rate which can be obtained from the ACRES Business Manager.
During the course
This is an ONLINE course using the video platform Google Meet. It is taught in real-time by a tutor on Tuesday and Thursday mornings 9:30 to 12:00.
You will need
A laptop, computer or portable device with a camera/webcam and microphone. Ideally, it will be less than 5 years old.
Good broadband / Wi-Fi connection
You may wish to create a separate email account for your online learning before the start of the course and let the ACRES' team and your tutor know the address. This will be more secure and also allow you to share your email address with other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.
What you already need to know
You do not need to have an ESOL qualification before taking this course. Before joining the course you will meet your tutor who will help find the right course for you.
What you will learn
Reading
To improve your vocabulary and pronunciation
Develop your knowledge about the use of grammar
Develop your reading skills to be able to gain information and understand written documents you may see in everyday life
Writing
How to write complete grammatical sentences
How to improve your spelling and your punctuation
You will also learn how to complete forms
If you wish, you can take an exam at the end of the course to get an ESOL qualification in Reading and/or Writing. The exam will take place over 8th and 13th July at the Uckfield Civic Centre, Uckfield.
How you will learn it
This is a realtime online course. You will learn directly from your tutor as well as through presentations, watching and listening to videos and the spoken word, practice activities and discussions. Throughout the course, you will be supported by your tutor who will discuss and agree personal targets to help you reach your potential.
What do I need to bring to the first session?
You will be emailed a link to the Google Meet session. Just before 9:30, the start of the session, click on this link and you will either go straight into the session or into a waiting area and your tutor will let you join.

How much extra study or practice is involved?
A requirement of this course is that you complete 37.5 hours of self-study. This is approximately 2.5 hours of study a week.
