This is a friendly real-time online course taught by our experienced Belly Dancing tutor, Ann Law, covering some of belly dancing's core techniques and combinations.
What you already need to know
You do not need any previous knowledge of Belly Dancing, only an enjoyment of dance.
What you will learn
Each week you will learn or develop a different technique or combination, for example, shoulder and hip shimmies, hip drops and hits, Egyptian walk, figure eights and camels that may be incorporated into a future choreography.
How you will learn it
This is an online course taught in real-time by experienced Belly Dancing tutor, Ann Law. Ann will demonstrate each technique and combination and guide you through each practice with clear verbal instructions and prompts.
What do I need to bring to the first session?
ACRES' online courses will be taught in real time using the video platform Google Meet, supported by other online resources. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in the sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking, listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time.
You will therefore need to have access to either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or phone) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.
Though it is not essential, you may choose to create a separate email account for your online learning (preferably Gmail which is most compatible with Google Meet). This will give you the added security to allow you to share your email address with your tutor and other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.
At the start of the course and before each lesson your tutor will send you an invitation with a link to join the class and any further information including resources and equipment you will need for the lesson.
Materials and items you will need to do the course
An area of around 2 metres by 2 metres that is free of obstacles and with enough space to take arms overhead
A quiet belly dance belt if possible if you already have one
Leggings or something comfortable to dance in (no jeans please)
How much extra study or practice is involved?
Practising the moves and combinations between sessions will be beneficial but is only optional. To aid learning Ann may suggest a piece of music to listen to or something specific to view on the internet between sessions.
What do previous students say?
"It's brilliant to exercise while having so much fun."
"I can thoroughly recommend this class to people of all ages. A definite confidence builder."
Ann started Belly dancing in 2001 and believes it is an excellent form of exercise for the body and mind as well as a tremendous confidence booster. She regularly performs individually and with her students.
