What you already need to know

You may already have done some yoga, or you may be a beginner. This course is designed to cater for all abilities as you are encouraged to work within your personal movement range.

What you will learn

The content of the course will be presented in 2 six-week online units in the autumn term and then in 2 twelve-week units over the next 2 terms, each can be taken on their own if desired.

The first two units will focus on flexibility working through a series of postures (asanas) to explore the six yoga movement groups. A breathing practice (pranayama) will be developed to enhance the practice together with a meditation practice (dharana) and relaxation (yoga nidra).

The second unit will introduce asana and pranayama practices specifically designed to raise energy levels, develop strength and build confidence. Yoga nidra will continue to be explored together with meditation to deepen the experience.

The third unit will focus on the subtle yogic anatomy linked to the major asana groups. Asana, pranayama, yoga nidra and dharana practices are offered on their own or together equipping you with a 'toolbox' of practices to explore at home.

You will

By participating in any one or more of the courses, you should gain a greater awareness of your own body's movement range and recognise areas for developing flexibility and increased strength. You should also become able to identify potentially beneficial breathing and relaxation techniques.

How you will learn it

This is an online course taught in real-time by experienced yoga tutor, Kim Kriyasagar. Kim will demonstrate new postures and techniques and guide you through each practice with clear verbal instructions and prompts. Props will be used where appropriate and movements broken down and then layered in order to develop a solid base from which you can progress. You will be encouraged to develop an awareness of your own body and movement patterns.

Bring to the first session

ACRES' online courses will be taught in real time using the video platform Google Meet, supported by other online resources. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in the sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking, listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time.

You will therefore need to have access to either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or phone) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.

Though it is not essential, you may choose to create a separate email account for your online learning (preferably Gmail which is most compatible with Google Meet). This will give you the added security to allow you to share your email address with your tutor and other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.

At the start of the course and before each lesson your tutor will send you an invitation with a link to join the class and any further information including resources and equipment you will need for the lesson.
