Drawing and Painting Part 3 CANCELLED (UC09L02A)

The focus of this course is project work: learning how to use your existing skills and knowledge of drawing and painting to develop your own individual artistic style or language.

Course overview

Drawing and Painting Part 3 - Project-based Workshop has a different focus to that of the previous Drawing and Painting courses. On this course you will continue to work with observational drawing, studies of tone, form, colour and composition, but you will aim to employ these core skills and knowledge to explore and develop your own unique art style and language.

Guided project work will be optional and there will be an emphasis on own project work. Students will be encouraged to approach their artwork as a professional artist may, taking an initial idea, developing it through research and experiment and then producing a final original piece of artwork on page or canvas.

This course's focus will be landscape art.

We would like to make you aware that this is an online version of the Drawing and Painting Part 3 course that normally Riga would deliver at the Belmont Centre, Uckfield. This and the next course starting 2nd November are online. However, we hope to offer courses back at the Belmont in the New Year, subject to Covid-19 government guidelines. Please check our website for regular updates.

What you will learn

The theme of this course will be landscape art.

The focus of this course is learning how to use your existing skills and knowledge of drawing and painting to develop your own individual artistic style or language. During the course, you will have the opportunity to learn about, and experience for yourself, the decision processes involved when you start with a general concept and take it through to a final piece of original artwork. You will look at how to investigate source material, examine different compositions and viewpoints, consider the effects of using different media or techniques, how to use study drawings to increase confidence and develop ideas, and finally how to analyse your work in order to recognise areas of possible improvement.

During the course, Riga will support you to

How you will learn it

Using the online medium you will learn directly from your tutor as well as through tutor demonstrations, presentations, online resources and group discussion. Through practical work, there will be an opportunity to explore your own ideas and methods and to receive individual tuition. There will also be an opportunity to look at the source material and the work of other artists.

Padlet will be used to create an online interactive course support page with information, images, examples, demonstrations and video links uploaded to support each session as well as an online gallery for student work. Both of these can be accessed via the links given at the course start and can be used to support your development both in and away from the online classroom.

Bring to the first session

ACRES' online courses will be taught in real time using the video platform Google Meet, supported by other online resources. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in the sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking, listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time.

You will therefore need to have access to either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or phone) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.

Though it is not essential, you may choose to create a separate email account for your online learning (preferably Gmail which is most compatible with Google Meet). This will give you the added security to allow you to share your email address with your tutor and other students on the course to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.

At the start of the course and before each lesson your tutor will send you an invitation with a link to join the class and any further information including resources and equipment you will need for the lesson.
