Course overview

Introduction to the basic techniques of upholstery. Learn how to upholster a stool or dining chair. Upholstery is a process; a methodical, yet deeply satisfying hobby that cannot be rushed. Develop your skills gradually and be amazed by what you can produce.
Those who attended the Introduction to Upholstery earlier this year, or who have some basic knowledge of upholstery can bring the same type or slightly larger piece of furniture on which you will consolidate your skills and develop them further with new and more advanced techniques.
This is a continuation of the course that started in the Autumn Term. Please contact the ACRES office to enquire about spaces if you have not previously enrolled on this course.
Where This is an online course.
When Tuesday, 7:00pm - 9:00pm from 12th May 2020 until 14th July 2020 for 9 weeks.

Cost The full fee is £110.00. The concessionary fee is £58.00.


Additional Costs
You will need to bring in some materials as the course progresses. Your tutor will advise you. Please do not purchase anything until you have discussed it with your tutor. Course fees over £115 can be paid in one single payment at enrolment or in instalments by Standing Order. Please contact the office for details.

During the course

This is an online course which will be taught in real time using a video platform (usually Google Meet), supported by other online resources. To ensure you get the most out of the course and can fully participate in the sessions you will interact with your tutor and other students through speaking,
listening and the chat function, as well as being able to see each other via the video links, though you can turn off your camera and microphone at any time. You will therefore need to have access to
either a laptop, computer or portable device (eg tablet or phone) (this ideally needs to be less than 5 years old), with a camera / webcam and microphone, as well as a good broadband / Wi-Fi connection.

Though not a prerequisite, we would advise that you create a separate email account for your online learning prior to the start of the course and let the ACRES' Office and your tutor know the address.This will be more secure and also allow you to share your email address with other students on thecourse to enhance your learning experience, without disclosing your personal information.

Please note that this course has been converted from the previously advertised classroom based
course and whilst we will endeavour to deliver the subject as outlined in the Course Information Sheet content may need to be adapted or changed to ensure you receive the best possible learning
experience. Your tutor will give you further details and information, including any resources or
equipment you need, prior to the start of the course.

What you already need to know

This course is aimed at complete beginners and those with some basic upholstery experience. The course will be structured so that all learners work together through the upholstery process working on a footstool or dining chair with 'drop in' seat.
Those who attended the Introduction to Upholstery earlier this year, or who have some basic knowledge of upholstery can bring the same type or slightly larger piece of furniture on which you will consolidate your skills and develop them further with new and more advanced techniques.

What you will learn

Upholstery is a process and Emma will take you through these step by step.
Topics covered will include:
- Basic tear back
- Order of operations for upholstered furniture
- Correct measuring and cutting of fabric
- How to centre and tension fabric for a smooth finish
- Introduce you to trims / pleats / easement cuts
- Foam selection and ratios for creating a foam insert

How you will learn it

You will learn through tutor demonstration, printed handouts, and practical application.
Once you have mastered the basic techniques the tutor will work 1:1 with you to plan a project that will allow you to expand your skills using more complex techniques.

Bring to the first session

For the first session you will need a small footstool or dining chair with 'drop in' seat. You may have other pieces of furniture in mind to work on later in the course. If you are unsure, please telephone or email the ACRES office so that the tutor can guide you before the course starts.
The fabric you would like to use, enough to cover the cushion area with some to spare
Flat blade screwdriver
Round nose pliers
The tutor will supply other tools including safety glasses.
Later in the course you may choose to bring in your own tools, the tutor can advise you before you purchase anything.
