What is ESOL?
ESOL is for people living in the UK who do not have English as a first language. It provides preparation for further ESOL or mainstream study and/or employment. ESOL can be studied at different levels from Entry Level 1 (Beginners) to Level 2 (Advanced)
Are there exams?
Yes. Every class will work towards a City & Guilds ESOL exam. These are nationally recognised qualifications in the UK. Students will be given the opportunity to sit one exam in speaking and listening, reading or writing.
Can I study Citizenship in Entry Level ESOL classes?
Yes. All Entry Level classes will include citizenship. A letter will be given to you at the end of 29 weeks of classes for the Home Office provided students have attended a minimum of 80% of lessons. If you need a specific ESOL exam for your application such as speaking and listening, it is your responsibility to let Barbara Jones-Ferguson, the ESOL Curriculum Co ordinator know as soon as possible. ACRES can not give help or advice on applications to the UK Borders Agency and can not guarantee that taking the course will mean that an application will be successful.
How much will it cost?
You can study English for around £4 per hour. Course costs will vary depending on the length of your course but an average course of 72 hours over 29 weeks will cost £330.50 which includes exam and assessment fees. The cost of the course will be confirmed once a place has been allocated on the most suitable course for you.
Reduced fees are available for those who qualify under the ACRES reduced fee policy. The current reduced fee for 29 week courses is £84.25. More information about eligibility for reduced fees can be found at the back of the brochure. Please ring us if you would like more information.
Am I eligible for ESOL classes?
ESOL courses are open to all EU adults (19+) and non-EU adults providing they meet the eligibility criteria. Please contact the ACRES Office on 01825 761820 for more details.
What can I do afterwards?
You can continue your English studies at the next ESOL level or, for more advanced students, progress on to GCSE English.
When can I join an ESOL class?
Students can join ESOL classes throughout the year. New students can join at the beginning of each term and each half-term.
